Chapter Eight

Eight a.m. came around all too quickly. Sergeant yawned, wishing he hadn’t bothered going to sleep. The nap had left him feeling groggy and out of sorts. He left Dillon to doze for a while longer and took a shower, hoping the shock of cold water would frighten the threads of sleep out of him. As he stepped out of the stall to dry himself, he felt as if a swathe of material shrouded his bones, muscles and mind.

“Fuck!” He didn’t need this right now, to feel so lethargic when they had such a dramatic day ahead of them.

“What’s up?” Dillon asked, coming into the bathroom. He flicked the shower back on then stepped inside, leaving the glass door open.

An invitation, Sergeant knew.

“Nothing,” Sergeant said, not wanting to worry him.

“Liar,” Dillon called from beneath the water. “You’re tired and it’s making you worry I won’t be on the ball when I go to Morgan’s Creek. When you go to Morgan’s Creek. But you’re not going anywhere near that diner.”

“What?” Sergeant was annoyed with himself that he hadn’t shielded his thoughts, that he’d planned to follow Dillon to town even though Dillon had told him to stay at the pack house.

“I told you, you’re needed here—you’re alpha. Your duty is to protect your pack, like I need to remind you,” Dillon said. “In case they do decide to fuck their usual protocol and storm the pack house, you have to stay behind. I was thinking before I went to sleep, that they might well do that, you know. Make up some bullshit story that we were plotting to kill the president or whatever. It wouldn’t be the first time evidence has been planted on computers and phones to make it seem like a cult or cell group are in action.”

Dillon scrubbed at his body with a loofah. A stream of lather slid down Dillon’s belly to settle on the hairs surrounding his cock. Sergeant’s dick twitched—no, I can’t let that happen now—and he tried to shrug off the need for another good fuck.
